Logistical Bottlenecks in Ecuador as Protests Related to Fuel Prices Continue
Ecuador President Guillermo Lasso declared a state of emergency in three provinces last Friday after violent protests were started to demand a reduction in fuel prices. A week later there are no signs of letting up.
According to reports, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (CONAIE) has been blocking highways and access to Quito. Protests have been in the Andean provinces of Pichincha and neighboring Cotopaxi (south) and Imbabura (north). As of Wednesday there were reports of two deaths and injuries of 90 civilians and 100 members of security forces...
Alaska Salmon Landings on Track Timewise, Except Chinook and Chum — Much Lower on Average
Alaska salmon landings by the end of last week (statistical week 25 or June 18, 2022) for sockeye and pink salmon were on par with historical averages across the state, but Chinook showed no increase in the last week, compared to a rise last year at that time and an even higher increase during statistical week (SW) 25 over the five-year average. Chum landings were a little higher than last year at this time, but still lower than the five-year-average by SW25 ...
Massive Tundra Fires in Western Alaska Threaten Fishing Communities
Fishermen and their families in St. Mary’s on the Yukon and in Dillingham and King Salmon in Bristol Bay were breathing a bit easier earlier this week when wildfires are no longer advancing their way. Residents of St. Marys evacuated as the East Fork fire — currently 125,000 acres — came within 3.5 miles of the Yukon River community.
In Dillingham, the Iowithla River Fire, then burning some 36,500 acres, advanced to within 9.5 miles of the largest population center in the Bristol Bay region, just a few weeks away from peak fishing ...
Chum Salmon Counts are Lower Than Ever in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta
Chum salmon counts are lower than ever this year in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced on June 21 that this summer has seen the lowest ever summer chum runs as of this date on the Yukon River. That’s according to a sonar at Pilot Station. The sonar has counted 843 summer chum salmon, compared to a median of 1,737 fish as of June 21.
The department said that chinook counts are well below average too...
P.E.I. Fishers Seek Province's Help in Wake of Herring, Mackerel Moratorium
The P.E.I. Fishermen's Association (P.E.I.F.A.) is calling on the provincial government to do more to support those hit hard by a ban on fishing mackerel and herring.
In March, the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans put a moratorium on commercial fishing for herring in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and mackerel across the East Coast, saying urgent action is required to allow the stocks to recover. Fishers were not pleased, and said a complete moratorium goes too far.
"This has been a devastating and direct blow for these...
Asia-US Container Shipping Rates are Flashing Two Bearish Signals
Trans-Pacific spot container shipping rates have crossed two bearish thresholds. It depends on which indexes you believe, but according to Drewry’s, spot freight rates are now below where they were at this time last year, and according to Xeneta’s, spot rates are now below current contract rates.
Spot rates now versus last year
Drewry’s weekly spot rate assessment, released Thursday, put Shanghai-Los Angeles rates at $7,952 per forty-foot equivalent unit, down 7% year on year (y/y). Drewry put the Shanghai-New York rate...
Offshore Wind and Fisheries: BOEM Seeks Public Comment on Draft Mitigation Strategy
A number of entities like to say fisheries and offshore wind can co-exist, but that claim is becoming increasingly difficult to repeat as more areas are identified or leased on the East Coast, Gulf of Mexico and West Coast for wind farms.
However, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management says it wants to ensure that offshore renewable energy development occurs in a thoughtful manner that minimizes conflicts with other ocean users. On Thursday, BOEM announced the availability of draft guidance on mitigating potential impacts of ...
Federal Agencies Reverse Trump Limits on Habitat Protection
The Biden administration on Thursday withdrew a rule adopted under former President Donald Trump that limited which lands and waters could be designated as places where imperiled animals and plants could receive federal protection.
A definition of “habitat” published in December 2020, shortly before Trump left office, restricted areas the government could identify as critical for particular wildlife. Environmental advocates said the move would put more species on a path toward extinction, while supporters said it would secure private property rights...
Grant Applications Now Available for Oregon’s Seafood Processing Industry
Potential seafood processing support in Oregon is now just a few clicks away.
The Oregon Department of Agriculture announced Thursday it is accepting applications for $1.5 million in grants supporting Oregon’s seafood industry. Earlier this year the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it would distribute approximately $50 million to 24 states and one U.S. territory to help defray the costs incurred by the seafood processing facilities and processing vessels preparing for, preventing exposure to, and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Applications are available at ODA ...
GAO Recommends USDA Strengthen Efforts to Prevent Unsafe Drug Residue in Imported Seafood
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a number of “priority open recommendations” for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to implement including increasing its focus on efforts to prevent unsafe drug residue in imported seafood, among other recommendations.
The GAO wants the USDA to “protect the safety of the food supply” by having the Administrator of the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) coordinate and communicate with the FDA in developing drug residue testing methods and corresponding maximum residue levels (MRLs) for imported catfish...
Oregon Offshore Wind Developers Rebuff Push Toward Deeper Waters
Offshore wind power developers are rebuffing Oregon seafood industry efforts to nudge their development opportunities into deeper waters farther off the coast.
The viability of siting projects in deeper waters has emerged as a key question after federal ocean energy managers outlined two zones , one off Coos Bay and the other Brookings, for leasing consideration.
Those “call areas” begin about 14 miles from the coast and extend from 46 to 65 miles offshore, with water depths ranging up to 1,300 meters. The seafood industry and backers, including the bipartisan Oregon Coastal...
UK’s Fish And Chip Shop Crisis Calls For Menu Diversification
In the past week industry leaders have warned that the UK’s fish and chip shop channel is under threat. Rising energy bills combined with the Russia–Ukraine conflict hiking oil, wheat, and fish prices has led to lower consumer footfall at outlets and for a growing number of businesses closure altogether. Current supply chains are no longer sustainable for fish and chip shop owners so they must find alternative suppliers while continuing to deliver affordability and a quintessentially British menu board. The answer for many operators may lie...

Dr. Beattie brings more than 20 years of...
As Feds Eye More Wind Leases Off Virginia, Fishing Industries Fear Losses
Today, two wind turbines turn off Virginia’s coast. But by the middle of the next decade, hundreds more may have joined them.
With a major push underway by President Joe Biden’s administration to develop 30 gigawatts of offshore wind as a way to reduce U.S. reliance on fossil fuels, federal officials are looking to dramatically expand the areas where wind farms can be built in U.S. waters.
Virginia is an epicenter of interest: Of 4 million acres of ocean identified as potential wind energy...

Designed for students in grades 7 to 12, the weeklong “Aquaculture Camp” will introduce participants to the science of aquaculture through lab-based work in biology and field work performed on the Plymouth Bay coast.

B.C. Salmon Farming Industry Welcomes Consultation After Years of 'Ad Hoc' Talks
A formal consultation process for the future of the industry is welcome after years of "ad hoc" discussions over Ottawa's pledge to end open-net salmon aquaculture, the executive director of the B.C. Salmon Farmers Association said Thursday.
Ruth Salmon said it will bring the industry, First Nations and the federal and B.C. governments together to talk about how to transition away from open-net farms.
Studies have shown open-net pens can spread disease to wild fish, though Salmon said the global aquaculture industry is changing...
McDonald's to Revamp Franchise System
McDonald's Corp. plans to make some of the biggest changes in decades to the franchising system that underpins its U.S. operations, as it seeks to reinvigorate its base of restaurant owners.
Executives this week notified the burger chain's franchisees that they will have to go through a more stringent review every 20 years to keep their restaurants, according to an email to franchisees viewed by The Wall Street Journal. McDonald's will consider new factors, like performance history, as it asks owners to apply to keep their locations. The company will consider new factors, such as customer complaints, to determine which McDonald's franchisees can add new locations.
Biden Administration Launches Federal-State Offshore Wind Implementation Partnership
The Biden Administration announced the launch of a new Federal-State Offshore Wind Implementation Partnership aiming to speed up the development of offshore wind farms on June 23.
The partnership features the White House and 11 governors along the East Coast of the country. The group said the first step will be a “commitment to collaborate on expanding key elements of the offshore wind supply chain, from manufacturing facilities to port capabilities to workforce development.”
Previously, the President has made a number of advancements to push offshore wind including...
Louisiana Congressmen Graves And Carl Ask USDA To Renew Domestic Shrimp Purchase
U.S. Congressmen Garret Graves of Louisiana and Jerry Carl of Alabama recently sent a letter to Thomas Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture, requesting the department once again purchase Gulf shrimp under Section 32 of the Agricultural Adjustment Act to be donated to schools, the underprivileged and disaster relief groups.
During the pandemic years of 2020-21, the Department made two similar purchases of $25 million and $24.7 million led by the efforts of Rep. Graves and the American Shrimp Processors Association (ASPA), a member of the Louisiana...
Maine to Reimburse Fees for Commercial Fishing, Aquaculture
Gov. Janet Mills announced Thursday that her administration will reimburse license and tag fees for commercial fishermen and aquaculturists in an effort to provide some relief amid skyrocketing inflation and record high fuel prices.
The Maine Department of Marine Resources will use $8.3 million in federal funds from the Consolidated Appropriations Act to reimburse the costs of commercial harvesting licenses, as well as associated fees, such as initial fees for tags required for each lobster trap.
"Maine's commercial fishing and seafood industry is a crucial cornerstone of our economy...
'Who's Setting the Prices?' | LA Shrimpers are Losing Money, Even as Food Gets More Expensive
In Louisiana, the price of everything is going up — especially if you're a shrimper.
But the one thing that's cheaper than ever is the shrimp they're catching.
"You can barely make it with the price of ice at $22 a block and fuel at almost $5 a gallon," Michael Lobue Sr., a Barataria shrimper, said. "You can't make it."
Despite the prices we're seeing at restaurants and grocery stores, shrimpers are getting around $1.60-per-pound for fresh Louisiana shrimp...
Xinpangao International Trade Corporation Recalls Shrimp Dumplings Due to Undeclared Allergen
Xinpangao International Trade Corporation recalled its Shrimp dumpling with fish wrapper products due to undeclared egg, per a recall notice posted on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) website on June 23.
The recalled product has been sold in Ontario and Quebec and may have been distributed in other provinces or territories, the CFIA wrote.
The recall was triggered by CFIA test results and the department is currently conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.
The CFIA recommended the following...
Fish-Free Seafood Made From Fungi and Seaweed: Scientists and Michelin Chef to Develop Products
A team of scientists led by Dr Leonie Jahn from the Technical University of Denmark is collaborating with Diego Prado, head of research at Copenhagen’s two Michelin-starred restaurant Alchemist, to develop sustainable alt seafood through fermentation.
Nearly half of EU marine habitats have been assessed as either endangered or near threatened – mainly due to pollution, fishing and aquaculture – by the European Commission.
It is perhaps unsurprising therefore that Europe currently imports three times more seafood than it produces...
Seafood and Gender Equality Receives $400,000 Grant To Further Mission
Seafood and Gender Equality (SAGE), an initiative under fiscal sponsorship of nonprofit Coastal Quest, has reason to celebrate. SAGE received a philanthropic grant of $400,000 from Builders Initiative to “further its mission to ensure a more inclusive, diverse, and equal seafood sector.”
“Behind every bite of seafood, there are women – from those who harvest at sea, to those who carefully process our seafood, to those who lead in the seafood sector,” said Laura Rodriguez, Oceans Program Officer at Builders Initiative. “We are proud to support SAGE...
Vietnam Seafood Exporters Face Challenging Second Half of 2022: Conference
Seafood exporters in Viet Nam may find the second half of 2022 a challenging period compared to the first due to slowing global economic growth, despite a successful first half of the year, according to a conference held by the Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers.
Since the start of 2022, seafood businesses have been focusing on recovering their production, increasing exports and networking with partners after the COVID-stricken year of 2021.
Exports of seafood in the first five months of the year reached...
NFI Crab Council Meets in Maryland For Summer Working Group Meeting Series
What summer break? Members of the National Fisheries Institute’s (NFI) Crab Council met in Baltimore, Maryland earlier this week as part of their working group meeting series. The meeting, which took place from June 21-22, was the third of the policy and project focused meetings since 2019. Previous consultations have resulted in everything from development of detailed units of assessment, to track Fisheries Improvement Projects (FIP), to the adoption of the Spawning Potential Ratio (SPR) method to quantify and monitor progress ...
‘We’ll Do It Ourselves’: Weary Of Waiting On Ottawa, First Nation Sets Up Marine Protected Area
A First Nation in B.C. celebrated Indigenous Peoples Day by taking action where the federal government has not by establishing a new marine protected area in the Great Bear Coast.
Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation (KXFN) elected Chief Doug Neasloss and the nation’s hereditary chiefs formally and unilaterally announced the Gitdisdzu Lugyeks (Kitasu Bay) Marine Protected Area (MPA), a 33.5-square-kilometre ocean protection zone in their traditional territories near Laredo Sound, 500 kilometres north of Vancouver.
The KXFN and 16 other coastal nations...
UB Consulting: Has the Foodservice Industry Recovered?
It has been no surprise that the foodservice industry suffered during the pandemic. From the lockdowns to patron fear of catching COVID, we witnessed some of our favorite restaurants disappear. Still, the industry continues to fight battles along all fronts—inflationary pressures, rising employment costs, and supply chain disruptions, to name a few. It has been over two years since the emergence of the pandemic, which offers us the opportunity to dissect how the foodservice sector has coped up until now...
