STATEWIDE — Maine’s second-ever wild blueberry weekend is a chance for out-of-state visitors and locals alike to get a taste of the wild blueberries here in the state.
Governor Janet Mills stood with blueberry farmers when she declared the first wild blueberry weekend at the Blaine House last July. A wild blueberry farm in holden is showing visitors their farm for the very first time.
“We acquired this property in 1981 ish and we built the home in ’84 and the blueberries are just an added bonus with the view so we decided at that point that we needed to nourish the blueberries to provide us with a product that is desirable and it has paid off,” says Rhonda Warren, owner of Copeland Hill Wild Blueberry Farm in Holden.
Warren says people came out to harvest blueberries Saturday and describes her blueberries as.
“Sweet, definitely sweet,” says Warren.
People were able to buy 10-pound bags of wild blueberries fresh or frozen.
“We just came to get them because my sister is not here and her room is based off blueberries for sal so we thought it’d be fun for her,” says young Ian Saslav, visiting from Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Blueberries for Sal is a children’s book which Saslav says is his sister’s favorite. Linda Johnston a family member of the Copeland Hill Wild Blueberry Farm says coming to Maine is her favorite part of the year.
“I look forward to it every year I’ve been working Rhonda’s blueberries 10-12 years something like that,” she says.
Johnston enjoys creating a wide variety of food products with Maine’s blueberries.
“We make jelly, we make jam, we make blueberry pie it’s a lot of fun,” she says.
Warren says Sunday is their last day of fresh blueberries. From Monday on her farm will carry frozen wild blueberries for the public to purchase.
Family friend Johnston says some farmers don’t normally open their doors to the public — it was great meeting everyone she says.
“This place is amazing the sunsets the sunrises, ‘oh my god’,’ it’s just a nice place to be.”
Restaurants and breweries are participating in Wild Blueberry Weekend as well.
