My early memories of breakfast included warm cereal like Cream of Wheat, and freshly squeezed orange juice. In the early 50’s cod liver oil was added to the juice, which of course made it almost undrinkable. Weekends we often had bacon and eggs. Later, when speed was essential to get to school, we had dry cereals like corn flakes and new products with added sugar, from which we saved box tops to order wonderful crap through the mail, which took 8 weeks to arrive: “spy-detecto-ring”.
College provided heartier breakfasts, which were ofter skipped, because one would rather grab an extra few minutes of sleep. Navy bootcamp was a big change. Giant breakfasts, good hearty food, with meat and potatoes and more. It was a few minutes free of harassment so we stayed as long as possible and ate everything. I gained 10 pounds in 8 weeks.
In subsequent years I settled on oatmeal with fruit, knowing it was “good for me”. Presently I have one piece of toast with peanut butter and jam, plus coffee and pills…..lots of pills. This is fine, and yet while traveling or even going to local restaurants like Sunshine Cafe I can pack away pancakes, juice, omelet, hash browns, bacon and sausage and english muffins without missing a beat, and enjoy it all immensely.
I know a few people who skip breakfast entirely. Difficult for me to relate.
My all-time favorite is onion bagel, lox, cream cheese, capers, red onion, dill, and fresh tomato.
